Program Services

Learn how to manage your asthma. Locatean allergist. Get discounts on medication. Join a support group. Theseand countless other sources of help are available through AAFA Maryland-GreaterWashington, D.C.  Here are just a few of the many ways we can help. 

  • Physician referrals: Locate an asthma and allergy specialist in your area. 
  • Patient Assistance: Provides one-time aid to patients with a demonstrated need. Typical assistance includes emergency transportation or equipment.  Please click on the following to view the Patient Assistance Form.   The Patient Assistance Program
  • Camp Scholarship Program:  Provides two weeks at a resident camp for children with special health needs. 
  • Research: Supports research to find cures, promote sound treatment methods and share new knowledge to prevent asthma and allergies.

Patient Education

  • Asthma Care Training for Kids (ACT):  Teaches children and their parents/guardians the decision-making skills used in the management of asthma and allergies. 
  • Patient Information Brochures: Available on a wide variety of topics, including: asthma basics, allergy basics, household allergens, dust, mold, pets, cockroaches, and many more. 
  • You Can Control Asthma: A set of easy-to-read workbooks – one for the family and one for children ages 6 to 12, to help learn everything one needs to know about asthma.
  • Meeting-in-a-Box: A series of self contained, comprehensive kits that include all the necessary components for a successful asthma presentation. Each kit has materials for a one-hour presentation.
  • PowerBreathing: An asthma education program specifically designed for teens. This interactive program covers everything from the basics of asthma to dealing with their asthma in social situations, in college and on the job. 

 
Public Education

Patient and family education comes first in the management of asthma. Learnabout the underlying causes of asthma, the relationship of asthma to allergies,the proper use of medications and many other subjects. 

  • National AAFA Publication: AAFA National’s Advance newsletter providesmembers with the latest information on special asthma and allergy subjects. 
  • BreathingEasier:  AAFA Maryland-Greater Washington, D.C. Chapter’snewsletter provides members with asthma and allergy related updates. 
  • Lung Function Screening Tests: These screenings are offered at communityhealth fairs. Individuals scoring below average are urged to contact theirphysicians for a medical evaluation. 
  • Speakers Bureau: Experts address groups on a variety of topics relatingto asthma & allergic diseases. 
  • Continuing Medical Education: This service helps keep health care providersup to date on the latest medical developments in asthma and allergies. 
  • Child Care Provider Course: A certified three-hour course that teacheschild care providers how to manage children with asthma and allergies ina day care setting. Maryland State Child Care Administration approved.
