Program Services

Learn how to manage your asthma. Locate an allergist. Get discounts on medication. Join a support group. These and countless other sources of help are available through AAFA Maryland-Greater Washington, D.C.  Here are just a few of the many ways we can help. 

bullet  Physician referrals: Locate an asthma and Allergy specialist in your area.
bullet Patient Assistance: Provides one -time aid to patients with a demonstrated need. Typical assistance includes emergency transportation or equipment.
bullet Camp Scholarship Program: Provides two weeks at a resident camp for children with asthma or allergies.
bullet Research: Supports research to find cures, promote sound treatment.
bullet Research Grants

 Patient Education

bullet Asthma Care Training for Kids (ACT): Teaches children and their parents/guardians the decision making skills used in the management of asthma and allergies.
bullet Patient Information Brochures: Available on a wide variety of topics, including: asthma basics, allergy basics, household allergens, dust, mold, pets, cockroaches, and many more.
bullet You Can Control Asthma: A set of easy-to-read workbooks – one for the family and one for children ages 6 to 12, to help learn everything one needs to know about asthma.
bullet Meeting-in-a-Box: A series of self contained, comprehensive kits that include all the necessary components for a successful asthma presentation. Each kit has materials for a one hour presentation.
bullet PowerBreathing: An asthma education program specifically designed for teens. This interactive program covers everything from the basics of asthma to dealing with asthma in social situations, in college and on the job.

Public Education

Patient and family education comes first in the management of asthma. Learn about the underlying causes of asthma, the relationship of asthma to allergies, the proper use of medications and many other subjects.  

bullet National AAFA Publication: AAFA National’s Advance newsletter provides members with the latest information on special asthma and allergy subjects.   
bullet  Breathing Easier:  AAFA Maryland-Greater Washington, D.C. Chapter’s newsletter provides members with asthma and allergy related updates.   
bullet  Lung Function Screening Tests: These screenings are offered at community health fairs. Individuals scoring below average are urged to contact their physicians for a medical evaluation.   
bullet  Speakers Bureau: Experts address groups on a variety of topics relating to asthma & allergic diseases.   
bullet  Continuing Medical Education: This service helps keep health care providers up to date on the latest medical developments in asthma and allergies.   
bullet  Child Care Provider Course: A certified three-hour course that teaches child care providers how to manage children with asthma and allergies in a day care setting. Maryland State Child Care Administration approved.

Annual Update presented by The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Immunology, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America , Maryland-Greater Washington, D.C. Chapter.  

Annual Scientific Symposium presented by The Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center and The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America , Maryland Greater Washington, D.C. Chapter.
